Smooth is one of the oldest words on this site. Dictionary.com dates the adjective to before 1050, from late Old English smōth, and Etymonline says its figurative use for people, meaning pleasant and polite, appears by the late 14th century, with "flattering, insinuating" following by the mid-15th century. The charm sense and the warning sense have travelled together for about 600 years.
Etymonline records a slang sense of "superior, classy, clever" in American English from 1893, and Time's 2014 slang timeline, drawn from the Oxford English Dictionary and Green's Dictionary of Slang, lists smooth in 1893 as a word that went from "free from lumps" to pleasant, then superior. By 1928 Etymonline has "smoothie" as American college slang for a suave person with "complete self-assurance and poise", and it dates "smooth talk" as a verb to 1950. No single coiner is documented; the social meaning grew out of the older ones step by step.
The best-known pop culture moment for the word is Sade's "Smooth Operator", the opening track on the album Diamond Life, which Sade's official site dates to July 16, 1984. The song arrived nearly a century after the 1893 slang sense, and it is why "smooth operator" still carries a retro wink for anyone who knows the song.
