The documented record for drip runs through Black American hip-hop, with an especially strong early example out of Houston. Lil' Keke's line "I'm draped up and dripped out," on "Pimp Tha Pen (Screwed)" with DJ Screw, appeared on the March 19, 1996 release 3 'N The Mornin' Part Two (Screwed), years before the artist claims attached to the word today.

Sauce Walka told Hot 97 in 2019 that he was behind the current use of the word, and HipHopDX reported in October 2018 that Gunna said he had the most influence on it. Dictionary.com calls the whole question disputed, including among rappers, and neither claim holds up as the word's start: Lil' Keke's line already used the same imagery almost two decades earlier.
