Karen is a meme label for behavior perceived as entitled, intrusive, or aggressively demanding, often in a public customer-service or policing context. In its more specific U.S. racial context, it has referred to white women who weaponize social or institutional power against Black people. It later broadened into a catch-all insult for complaining women, which is why many writers warn against using it carelessly or as a substitute for naming specific harmful behavior.

Where it came from
There is no documented single coiner. The modern racialized usage is widely linked to Black online culture and Black Twitter, with a longer history of generic labels such as Miss Ann, Becky, and incident-specific names such as Barbecue Becky. Other proposed influences include pop-culture characters, comedy, and late-2010s Reddit memes. The term became highly visible in 2020 amid pandemic conflicts, videos of police calls, and the Black Lives Matter protests.
