Meaning

What it means

Goated is an adjective built from GOAT, short for "greatest of all time". Wiktionary gives the formation as G.O.A.T. plus the ending -ed, and lists G.O.A.T.ED as an alternative spelling. Macquarie Dictionary labels goated colloquial and defines it as "of the highest or best class or quality; exceptional" in its 2024 Word of the Year longlist. Goated, GOATed and GOATED are the same word in three spellings. In everyday use it praises almost anything: a performance, a song, a meal, a game, a decision or an object. "That edit is goated" is a big compliment, and "you're goated" tells someone they did something extremely well. The speaker is rarely making a literal all-time ranking, so calling a restaurant goated usually means it is elite and one of their favorites. The same loose spirit separates it from GOAT, which usually works as a noun or title, as in "Serena Williams is the GOAT". Goated can praise one play, one meal or one ordinary favorite. Sincere is the default. The word turns playful or ironic in stacked, oversized forms. "Wait I'm Goated" is a meme in which someone awards themselves a grand title for something small, and "goated with the sauce" can read as a joke when an adult or a brand is performing gaming slang on purpose. A short, plain "that was goated" is real praise. It is informal, so "excellent" or "outstanding" fits better in a report, a professional email or schoolwork. Say it "GOH-tid", like the animal plus the end of "wanted". "Goaded" is a different word that means provoked, with no connection to praise.

Origin

Where it came from

Goated comes from GOAT plus -ed, according to Wiktionary. The adjective turns up online by the late 2010s. A Fortnite esports wiki listing used it by March 2019, and a 2022 r/etymology thread reports older examples from anonymous imageboards dated July 15, 2014 and February 10, 2015, plus a January 2018 Urban Dictionary entry. Those posts show early online circulation, and a user-written dictionary entry cannot settle where a word began.

No single coiner is documented, and no single platform or community is confirmed as its birthplace. Sports talk, gaming chat and general internet culture all carried it. Gaming media helped it travel: PC Gamer used "goated on the sticks" in a 2022 article.

The 2023 meme "Wait I'm Goated" made the word far more visible. Know Your Meme dates the earliest identified example of the phrase to an altered Instagram story screenshot posted by @throwingfits on June 1, 2023, and says a July 22, 2023 TikTok of a Wait I'm Goated shirt gained roughly 1.4 million plays and 189,100 likes in 12 days. Earlier examples of goated exist, so the meme boosted a word that was already around. "Goated with the sauce" has no documented inventor either; PC Gamer discussed it on November 19, 2025, in connection with a 2025 Amazon Alexa advertisement featuring FaZe Rug.
