Timing decides what gg means. Typed after a match is over, it is sincere, often sent automatically by both sides the moment the result is locked in, an online handshake more than a five-star review. Typed early, while a comeback is still possible, especially by the player who is ahead, gg means something closer to "this is already decided," and it reads as gloating. A 2018 peer reviewed study of StarCraft II chat treats a gg sent at the end of a match as polite and one sent early by the winning player as rude. "Gg ez" pushes further, claiming the win was not just certain but easy. Blizzard took the phrase seriously enough to test an Overwatch filter in 2016 that swapped it for self-mocking stock messages. The near-synonym that actually confuses people is wp, short for "well played": gg closes out the match as a whole, often as routine etiquette, while wp credits one specific skillful play, and typing both together as "gg wp" does both jobs at once. In team games, a gg sent to both sides after the result is normal, but "gg team" or a gg aimed at one player tends to read as blame. Outside a match, gg borrows that closing signal for real life. "I deleted the project folder, gg" does not rate the deletion as fun; it means the situation is done, usually with irony or resignation. Where it came from
The documented origin is late 1990s online competitive game etiquette, an initialism of the plain phrase "good game", with no person, team or platform credited as its coiner. Know Your Meme's earliest located reference is an October 1999 Internet Chess Club article, "Thanks or No Thanks," which discusses a dispute over receiving gg after a chess loss, evidence the phrase was already common enough to argue about.
From chess, gg spread through early multiplayer games: a 2000 Half-Life multiplayer FAQ and a 2001 Diablo II terminology guide both list it as established chat shorthand, and it became closely associated with the competitive StarCraft scene, where the defeated player types gg as concession and the winning player is expected to answer in kind as a sign of mutual respect. By January 18, 2003, it was common enough that someone submitted a definition to Urban Dictionary, which records awareness of it; where it began is a separate question.
No one game invented gg, despite the StarCraft association, and it has not gone dated or retired since. It stays ordinary vocabulary across strategy games, shooters, MOBAs, online chess, and card games, and shows up in esports commentary, Twitch chat, and Discord. A University of Jyvaskyla thesis studied gg specifically on Twitter because it had already spread past gaming into everyday posts. It is not exclusive to Gen Z either; no source ties its use to one age group, though a younger reader is more likely to meet the ironic, non-gaming version first.
