Dazed describes it as someone who "posts on Instagram, archives her posts, and then unarchives them at a later date", and USA TODAY found the same pattern, with TikTok users talking about waiting four or five days before bringing a post back. The photo ends up on the grid, the person's own curated page, while skipping the moment when a brand new post lands in everyone's feed and collects likes in real time. The tone is low-key and a little self-aware, not an insult and not a brag. Willa Farrell told Dazed her grid has "become a little moodboard for me, rather than something for others", and Riley Meyer, 19, told USA TODAY she wanted a photo on her grid but did not think it was "main post worthy". Said about your own post, "I ghost-posted it" just explains how you did it. Said about someone else, it is usually an observation, sometimes with a light tease if the speaker thinks they are over-curating. Where it came from
The Archive feature arrived in June 2017, and the practice of using it this way was first written up as a named trend in 2026. Dazed published "Is the grid dead? How young people are changing the feed" by Isabel Bekele on August 14, 2026, interviewing people in their early and mid twenties who ghost post. USA TODAY followed on September 16, 2026, in a report by Rachel Hale that was syndicated widely. Neither credits anyone with coining the phrase, and no single coiner is documented.
The word is a plain compound: "ghost" for a post that vanishes and comes back, and "posting" in its ordinary sense. It is new, current and still settling, which is why most search results for it are about other things.
