Calling someone a chud imputes a package rather than a position: bad politics plus an unpleasant, crude, faintly anti-social way of behaving online. It is contemptuous rather than argumentative, and the person using it is dismissing somebody as not worth a debate rather than opening one. Merriam-Webster defines it broadly as a generalised disparagement, comparable to fool, jerk, or troll, and notes that its specific online use is a left-wing insult for a person on the far right. Wikipedia's entry leads instead with the political sense. Both are describing real slices of use, and the strength varies by setting: in an explicitly political thread it usually carries the full political meaning, while in general youth and meme use the political content thins toward loser or annoying person. There is also a real self-deprecating register, where people call themselves a chud or describe chud behavior as a joke about being unproductive, isolated, or terminally online.

Where it came from
The source word is the title of Douglas Cheek's 1984 creature film C.H.U.D., whose familiar expansion is Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. A Village Voice film notice by David Elliott dated 31 August 1984 already refers to the creatures as "Chuds" with that expansion, and it is the earliest dated published use located for this entry. The modern lower-case insult is a later semantic development rather than a reading of the acronym. Know Your Meme identifies a 28 February 2003 Urban Dictionary entry showing a general insult sense circulating online, which is a dated usage record rather than proof of origin, and places the attachment to right-wing politics in late 2019, identifying a 26 October 2019 post in r/PoliticalCompassMemes as a notable early political-compass example. In 2020 the word acquired its meme faces, Chudjak and later GigaChud. Recent journalism frequently credits the podcast Chapo Trap House with popularising the political sense; that claim recurs across sources and is not established as a single verified starting point, and no individual coiner has been documented for the modern insult.
