# How every generation says relax

Relaxing can mean taking the pressure off by yourself, or making an easy plan with somebody else. The generations mostly share the idea, but their favorite wording shifts between switching off, keeping things low-key, and simply spending time together.

## Saying "relax" across the ages

1. Gen Alphano word of its own

For an ordinary plan to relax or spend time together, Gen Alpha speakers generally use chill too. It is casual and current, but it is shared youth slang rather than a separate Gen Alpha label.

“We can just chill after practice.”

2. Gen Z[chill](https://genzdecoded.com/dictionary/chill/)

Chill can mean relax, calm down, or spend casual time together, and it is the broadest, least loaded choice here. Said to a friend, ‘we can just chill’ is friendly and low-pressure; said sharply to a stranger, ‘chill’ can sound like a dismissal.

“No big plan tonight, we can just chill at Maya’s.”

3. Millennial[chilling](https://genzdecoded.com/dictionary/chilling/)

Chilling is a casual way to say you are relaxing or spending unstructured time with people. It still sounds natural in a text, though younger speakers are more likely to use the shorter chill.

“I’m chilling at home after work, come by if you want.”

4. Gen X[veg out](https://genzdecoded.com/dictionary/veg-out/)

Veg out means switch off and do almost nothing, usually with a couch and a screen involved. It is casual and still understood, but it can sound a little Gen X or deliberately old-school to younger listeners.

“I’m going to veg out and watch movies all afternoon.”

5. Boomer[hanging out](https://genzdecoded.com/dictionary/hanging-out/)

Hanging out means spending informal time together; it points more to company than to rest. It is a longstanding, neutral casual phrase and does not sound dated, though it has never been limited to Boomers.

“We’re just hanging out on the patio after dinner.”

The through-line

## What they all have in common

Every version makes room for time without a formal agenda. The difference is in the picture it gives you: chill stays open-ended, veg out suggests passive recovery, and hanging out puts other people in the frame.
