Meaning

## What it means

Tf does its work inside a phrase. "What tf was that" is confusion about something that just happened, "get tf out" is a command with real force behind it, and "I miss it tf" is emphasis about the speaker’s own feelings, close to "so much". A bare "tf?" on its own is about as loud as a raised eyebrow. The reading changes when it points at a person: "what tf is wrong with you" is a challenge, and it usually lands as one. Dictionary.com calls tf an all-purpose internet swear that can carry disbelief, disgust, anger, surprise or a comic tone, and Collins describes the phrase underneath it as an intensifier used especially with question words to show annoyance or impatience. Between close friends who already swear with each other, most of this is banter. Sent to a coworker, a teacher or a stranger, the same line reads as disrespectful, because shortening a swear to two letters does not make it polite.

Usage

## How to use it

- “tf?”

On its own, a raised eyebrow. The sender is surprised or confused and has not said more yet.

- “what tf was that noise”

Confusion about something that happened. Nobody is being blamed.

- “get tf out”

A command, and the two letters add anger or dismissal to it.

- “I miss it tf”

Emphasis at the end of a statement, close to "so much". It is about the speaker’s own feelings.

- “what tf is wrong with you”

Aimed at a person. This is the shape that reads as a challenge or a reprimand.

Origin

## Where it came from

The phrase behind tf is more than a century old. Dictionary.com says "the f---" was in use as early as the 1910s, as a coarser version of "the hell", and that tf followed the lead of WTF, which was in use by 1985. By the 2000s tf was common online.

The earliest dated example yet located is a March 9, 2002 post on Dogs On Acid, a drum and bass forum, using "who tf". An earlier post quoted in the same thread spells the phrase out, so the meaning is clear from context. No single person, app or moment is credited with starting it. Gen Z uses it today, and it was already turning up in forum posts before most of Gen Z was born.

Who coined it

No single person is credited, the origin is well-documented.

Heads up

## Common mix-ups

Merriam-Webster lists TF as an abbreviation for task force, which is the likely reading in a memo or a report. In "who tf is that" it can only be the swear, because that is the one reading that makes a sentence. Tf is also just the two-word piece, "the f---". WTF is the whole reaction, "what the f---", which is why "who tf" works and "who wtf" does not.

FAQ

## Questions people ask

### What does TFW mean in Gen Z?

TFW stands for "that feel when". Dictionary.com traces it to 4chan, where it started as "that face when", and describes it as a way to frame a relatable moment, as in "tfw the bus pulls away as you get there". There is no swearing in it, and it is a different abbreviation from tf.

### What does TF stand for in chat?

The same as anywhere: "the f---". Chat apps do not have their own version. The part that changes is the audience, since a private thread between friends tolerates swearing that a group chat with a parent or a boss does not.

### What is TF in a text?

Also "the f---". The letters mean the same thing in a text, a comment or a DM, so read a tf in a text the way you would anywhere else: by what it is attached to.

### What does TF mean on Snap?

The same swear. There is no Snapchat-only meaning, so a tf in a snap reads like a tf in a text, by the words around it.

### Is tf rude?

Yes. It is a shortened swear, so it is out of place at work, at school or with anyone you do not know well, even when the sender means nothing hostile by it.

### Is tf an insult?

Only when it is aimed at someone. "What tf was that" reacts to a situation. "What tf is wrong with you" is directed at a person and lands as a dig.

### What can I say instead of tf?

It depends on the job the tf was doing. "What is going on?" or "who is that?" covers the questions, "what the heck?" or "seriously?" keeps some punch without the swear, and "I really miss it" covers the emphasis.

Did you know

Tf was already in use on a drum and bass forum in March 2002, about four years before Twitter launched.
