# pupper

noun/PUP-er/also: puppers, doggo, DoggoLingo

A pupper is a puppy, or a small dog, or any dog when the person talking is being affectionate. It is deliberately cutesy internet baby talk from the mid-2010s DoggoLingo style, and using it now reads as either sincere or knowingly retro.

Meaning

## What it means

It belongs to DoggoLingo, sometimes called Doggo-Speak: the pet-caption dialect that turns ordinary animal words into diminutives and comic baby talk, alongside doggo, floof, smol, boop, and heckin. Dictionary.com defines doggo and pupper as affectionate terms for dog and puppy, and says pupper developed from puppy for greater cuteness. The register is warm and knowingly ridiculous, and NPR described the dialect in 2017 as a way people collectively take part in pet-photo culture, never a technical vocabulary for describing animals. Nobody calling a dog a pupper is making a claim about its age; they are performing affection. There is a conventional size contrast, where a doggo is a dog and often an older or larger one while a pupper is a puppy or a smaller, more youthful-seeming dog, but people ignore it constantly and it is a tendency and nothing stricter. Cambridge and Collins both now carry the word, which is a sign it has settled from trend into vocabulary.

Usage

## How to use it

- “the tiny pupper tripped over its own ears”

The core use: affectionate, deliberately silly, and about a young or small dog.

- “out taking the puppers for a walk”

The extended use for dogs generally, which owners apply regardless of age when they are being fond.

- “a pupper is a smol doggo”

The conventional size contrast, widely repeated and loosely observed in practice.

Origin

## Where it came from

Pupper is an alteration of puppy that became part of the mid-2010s DoggoLingo wave, and its exact origin cannot be assigned to one post or one community. Dictionary.com says the progression from puppy to pupper is unclear. It supplies a May 2008 social-media post as the earliest dated dog use it can point to, from a user writing about enjoying a screened-in porch with the pupper, giving month and year but no day, URL, or archived capture. That is the earliest evidence anyone has located, which is short of a proven first use. The clearest spread milestone is later and better contextualised: Dictionary.com dates a May 2015 4chan image of a Chihuahua in a hoodie captioned "slight tight pupper" and credits reposts on 9GAG, Bodybuilding.com, FunnyJunk, and Reddit with helping spread the word. The account WeRateDogs, active from that year onward, is documented as a major populariser of doggo and pupper to a large audience, though it originated neither word. NPR published a national explanatory article on the dialect on April 23, 2017.

Geography

## Where it's popular

English-language pet-photo culture across Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram, strongest in the United States and the United Kingdom.

This is millennial-era vocabulary, and Gen Z did not produce it. That is unusual for this site and it is most of the word's value: it marks a generation, and it is no longer a current trend.

Timeline

## How it caught on

1. May 2008The earliest dated dog use located, a social-media post cited by Dictionary.com. Month and year only, with no archived capture, so it is the earliest anyone has located and short of a proven first use.
2. May 2015A 4chan image of a Chihuahua in a hoodie captioned "slight tight pupper" spreads to 9GAG, Bodybuilding.com, FunnyJunk, and Reddit. The clearest documented spread event.
3. 2015 onwardWeRateDogs begins and helps make doggo and pupper familiar to a very large audience. Documented as popularisation, not invention.
4. July and October 2016Reddit threads asking why everyone is suddenly calling dogs puppers, a good marker for when the word was at full strength.
5. April 23, 2017NPR publishes "Dogs Are Doggos: An Internet Language Built Around Love For The Puppers", documenting the dialect nationally.
6. 2020sCambridge and Collins both carry pupper as a dictionary entry, marking its shift from trend to settled vocabulary.

Heads up

## Common mix-ups

WeRateDogs did not coin pupper. The account is documented as a major populariser from 2015, and never as the inventor, and Dictionary.com explicitly declines to assign an origin. Pupper did not originate in Australia or in Dogspotting either: that evidence concerns doggo and the Australian habit of adding -o to words, and it does not transfer to pupper, which formed differently. The word also did not begin with the May 2015 4chan image, since a May 2008 dog use predates it; that image marks how far the word spread, and it marks no origin.

FAQ

## Questions people ask

### Is pupper slang for dog?

Yes, affectionately. It leans toward puppies and small dogs, and people apply it to dogs of any age when they are being playful. Cambridge and Collins both carry it as a real entry.

### Is pupper Gen Z slang?

Not really. It is mid-2010s internet vocabulary, closer to millennial territory, and it was at its peak around 2016. Gen Z uses it, but it did not come from Gen Z the way most terms on this site did.

### What is the difference between pupper and doggo?

Conventionally a pupper is younger or smaller and a doggo is older or larger. In practice people use both loosely, so treat it as a tendency and nothing anybody enforces.

### Is it weird to say pupper now?

Slightly retro, and a long way from weird. In pet captions and casual chat it reads as normal affection, while in professional or customer-facing writing it reads as too cute, which is where people object to it.

### Did WeRateDogs make it up?

No. The account popularised it from 2015 onward to a very large audience. The word is documented before that and no origin has been established.

Did you know

The word outlived the trend that made it. DoggoLingo peaked around 2016, and pupper has since picked up straight entries in both Cambridge and Collins, which is generally what happens when a word stops being a trend and starts being vocabulary.
