Meaning

## What it means

The word names a dynamic between a viewer and a public figure. Cambridge Dictionary defines it as a connection someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know, a character, or an artificial intelligence. Following a creator, loving their work or buying a ticket is being a fan; parasocial points at treating that one-way connection as if it were personal and mutual. How it lands depends on who it is aimed at. Said to someone, "you're being parasocial" is a rebuke: the speaker thinks you are acting as if you have a claim on a person who has never met you, often about their private life. Said about a situation, "that's so parasocial" is an observation. Said about yourself, "not to be parasocial, but" is a joking disclaimer that you know the attachment runs one way. Dictionary.com records a fan writing that she has an "inexplicable parasocial relationship with blackpink". It is not a slur, and it is not a clinical label for the person feeling the connection. Some fans argue it gets thrown at anyone who defends an unpopular opinion, and that complaint is part of how the word is used now.

Usage

## How to use it

- “you're being so parasocial about his breakup”

Aimed at someone. A rebuke for treating a stranger's private life as your business.

- “not to be parasocial but i was genuinely sad when that streamer quit”

About yourself. A joking disclaimer that you know the bond runs one way.

- “fans calling her their bestie is getting parasocial”

About a pattern. An observation more than a personal attack.

Origin

## Where it came from

Parasocial started as an academic term. Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl introduced it in 1956 in the journal Psychiatry, in a paper titled "Mass Communication and Para-Social Interaction: Observations on Intimacy at a Distance", spelled with a hyphen. They used it for the closeness radio and television audiences felt with presenters who seemed to talk straight to them. The prefix para- means alongside or resembling, so the word describes something that looks like a social bond without being one.

For decades it stayed in media studies and psychology. Dictionary.com says it moved into everyday online argument in 2021, when social media users used it to criticise people commenting on comedian John Mulaney's personal life. Cambridge Dictionary added it in 2023 and named it Word of the Year on November 18, 2025, citing its use about influencers, pop stars and AI chatbots.

Who coined it

Commonly credited to Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl (1956), well-documented.

Heads up

## Common mix-ups

Being a fan is not the same thing. Enjoying a creator's videos, following their posts or buying their merch is fandom; parasocial describes treating that one-way connection as personal and mutual. And the word describes a relationship pattern. It is not a mental health condition or a diagnosis of the person it is said about.

FAQ

## Questions people ask

### What does parasocial mean in slang?

A one-sided bond with a public figure who does not know you. Online it is often used as criticism: "you're being parasocial" means you are acting as though you personally know someone you do not.

### What is a parasocial person?

People use it for someone who acts as if they have a personal relationship with a creator or celebrity. The word describes the relationship, not a type of person, so it says nothing about anyone's mental health.

### What is an example of a parasocial relationship?

Feeling like a streamer you watch every day is your friend, even though they have never spoken to you. Researchers found in a 2017 study of 151 teenagers, average age 14.8, that 61.1 percent thought of their favourite celebrity as something like a relationship partner.

### How do I tell if I'm being parasocial?

By what you do with the feeling. Liking someone's work is fandom; the word points at treating the bond as mutual, like feeling entitled to their time or private life. It describes a pattern, and it is not a diagnosis, so no single post or feeling settles it.

### Is parasocial an insult?

It is not a slur, but said directly to someone it is a criticism. Said about yourself it is usually a joke.

### Does parasocial apply to AI chatbots?

Yes. Cambridge Dictionary's definition names artificial intelligence alongside famous people and fictional characters, and its 2025 Word of the Year announcement mentions AI chatbots.

Did you know

The word was coined in 1956 to describe TV viewers bonding with presenters, nearly 50 years before YouTube existed.
