Meaning

## What it means

NSFW stands for “not safe for work,” and sometimes “not suitable for work.” It warns that a link, image, video, or post may contain sexual material, nudity, graphic violence, profanity, or other content that could cause trouble or discomfort if seen around coworkers or in public. It is a context warning, not a claim that the material is illegal or bad.

Usage

## How to use it

- “NSFW: the link includes graphic medical photos.”

Giving a clear content warning before a link.

- “Please tag that video NSFW before posting it in the team chat.”

    Requesting a workplace-context warning.

- “The article is serious reporting, but the images are NSFW.”

Explaining that the warning concerns viewing context, not quality.

Origin

## Where it came from

NSFW emerged from early-2000s internet culture as a link warning. The Oxford English Dictionary cites evidence from 2002, while a 2007 Wired article shows the tag was already familiar on blogs. An older possible precursor, NFBSK, has been reported on message boards, but a person who coined NSFW is not documented.

Who coined it

No single person is credited, the origin is commonly reported.
