Meaning

## What it means

Girlypop is mostly a term of address, in the same family as girlie, bestie and queen. "Thank you girlypop, I owe you a coffee" is a friend being warm, and a creator who opens a video with "hey girlypops" is greeting the audience. Wiktionary labels this sense humorous and usually endearing, and lists it as meaning a female friend or girlie. It also works as a description. "Your outfit is so girlypop today" points at a deliberately feminine, cute or flamboyant style, and depending on the words around it the line can be approving, amused or lightly teasing. Know Your Meme records it for feminine men as well as women, and Them documents "girly pop masc" as sapphic TikTok language for masculine lesbians who enjoy conventionally feminine things. Tone depends on who says it. Between friends or inside a familiar online community it reads as affection. From a stranger, or right after a mistake with an eye-roll attached, it can turn patronizing. It suits texts, comments and captions; at work a name or "colleague" does the job. Girlypop also has an older, separate meaning for feminine pop music, which Wiktionary cites in print from 2001, so "this playlist is girlypop" describes a sound and nobody is being addressed.

Origin

## Where it came from

No single coiner is documented. Know Your Meme records one of the earliest known mentions as a series of drawings posted on DeviantArt on December 22, 2008, with numerous Twitter uses in 2009, a Tumblr account named girlypop in 2012 and an Urban Dictionary definition as early as September 19, 2018.

Know Your Meme says YouTuber Haley Pham helped popularize "girly pops" among her viewers in the late 2010s and early 2020s, and a Reddit "guide to girly pop" posted July 30, 2020 tied the word to her. Because the 2008 and 2009 uses came first, Pham's role is that of a popularizer. TikToker Ally Yost used "girlypop" to greet viewers throughout 2022, and Wiktionary says the slang sense has an uncertain origin and was popularized on TikTok in 2023.

The word is a compound of "girly" and "pop". LGBTQ+ communities use and adapt it, including the "girly pop masc" label, and that label builds on the wider general term. The music sense is a separate, older meaning and not the slang's documented source.

FAQ

## Questions people ask

### What does girly pop slay mean?

It stacks two compliments. "Slay" praises someone for doing something impressively well, and "girly pop" names the feminine, playful style behind it. Know Your Meme records a December 23, 2022 TikTok that used the phrase for a boyfriend styled up, which shows it is not limited to women.

### Where did Girlypop come from?

No single coiner is documented. Know Your Meme records the compound on DeviantArt on December 22, 2008 and on Twitter in 2009, and Wiktionary says the slang sense was popularized on TikTok in 2023.

### Why is everyone saying girly pop?

TikTok amplified it. Creators such as Ally Yost used it to greet viewers in 2022, and the "Slipknot is girlypop" trend in 2023 reached a much bigger audience. The word itself was circulating online by 2008.

### What does girly pop mean for a guy?

It describes or addresses a feminine or effeminate man, and the tone depends on the speaker. A friend usually means praise, as in "he showed up in a pink suit and he is so girlypop", while a stranger with a smirk is more likely teasing. Know Your Meme records a December 2022 TikTok about a boyfriend styled as a "slay girly pop" that passed 400,000 views in three months.

### Girly pop or girlypop?

Both spellings are in use, along with "girly-pop". Wiktionary lists the one-word form and Know Your Meme titles its page "Girly Pop / Girlypop", so either is easy to read and the one-word form is a safe default in writing.

### Is girly pop an insult?

Girlypop is usually affectionate or joking. It turns patronizing when a stranger says it, when it follows a mistake with an eye-roll, or when someone exaggerates femininity to mock another person. Judge it by the relationship, the platform and the words around it.

Did you know

A 2023 TikTok trend declared Slipknot girlypop, and Dazed reported more than 185,000 TikToks using the band's "Custer" sound by April 2024.
