Meaning

## What it means

"That's a bar" praises a line that is clever, hard-hitting or well made. Dictionary.com defines the hip-hop slang sense as a rapper's lyrics, especially when considered extremely good, so "you got bars" tells someone they write or rap well. Slang.net lists "hot bars" as witty rhymes. A bar usually has something extra in it: wordplay, a punchline, a sharp observation or a second meaning tucked under the first. "Spitting bars" can mean rapping in general, and it usually suggests skillful or forceful delivery. Bars adds a judgment that lyrics does not. Lyrics are the words of a song, good or bad, while bars says the writing or delivery is strong, so a rapper can have lyrics without having bars. "You've got bars" is a compliment on someone's writing, and "that's a bar" said right after someone speaks praises that one line. Online it travels well past music, with replies of "that's a bar" going to clever tweets, jokes, poems, speeches and comebacks. When someone posts an ordinary sentence as if it were deep and a reply says "bars", the reply is teasing, but praise is the default. The word is informal and strongly tied to hip-hop, so it fits comments, music talk and creative circles better than formal work writing. Context sorts out the other meanings. A bar in music is a span of beats, and rappers count verses that way, so "I wrote sixteen bars" is a statement about length. "Meet me at the bar" is a place to drink, "behind bars" is prison and "no bars" is a weak phone signal. In drug slang, bars are dosages of Xanax, which only comes up when the conversation is about pills. A message that follows a lyric, a joke or a witty remark is praise.

Usage

## How to use it

- “that last line was a bar”

Praise for one specific line, said right after hearing it.

- “ok you got bars, who wrote this”

A compliment on someone's writing or rapping ability.

- “he's spitting bars on this verse”

    Describes an active, skilled performance.

- “bars 🙄”

A reply to an ordinary sentence posted as if it were deep. This is the teasing use.

Origin

## Where it came from

Bars comes from the music term bar, a span of beats. Dictionary.com says bar has meant a song's time signature, or the number of beats in each measure, since at least the 1650s, and that as hip-hop grew in the 1990s and 2000s, artists and fans came to use bars for lyrics in general. Its list of 50 hip-hop words adds that a verse is usually 16 bars and that the word now also covers the lyrics performed over that span.

Hip-hop itself grew in the Bronx in the 1970s, and Smithsonian Magazine identifies the August 11, 1973 Back-to-School Jam at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue as a major early hip-hop event. That sets the cultural scene, and no first use of bars is tied to that night. By the 2000s Dictionary.com describes the term as established in freestyle rap battles and slam poetry, where spectators shout "Bars!" to praise a fiery line, and it says Urban Dictionary first entered the term in 2003, which dates an online entry rather than the first spoken use. A July 2017 Time article uses "spit bars" for actor Ryan Phillippe's improvised rap, which shows the phrase in mainstream entertainment writing.

No single rapper, producer, city or video is credited with the slang sense, so it reads as a gradual development inside rap culture. A bar also is not always one line: in slang it can mean a verse, lyrics in general or one especially strong line. Oxford Learner's Dictionaries traces the broader word bar to Middle English, from Old French barre.
